Creating a sacred space is essential for your spiritual and physical well being. Just as the bed in our bedroom gives our bodies a place to relax, a sacred space will give our minds a place to relax and quiet down. When our minds our quiet, we are able to touch the heart of the Divine and gain valuable information.
Creating your sacred space is easy. It can be as simple or as lavish as you want. The most important thing about creating your sacred space is that you make it yours. It needs to be comfortable to you and specified to your needs.
Find A Quiet Place
Your sacred space should be away from the noise and distractions of everyday life. While it is possible to create a sacred space outside, it is preferable to create one indoors. This way, you have more control over the temperature and environmental factors, where as outside, you have very little control over the noise, wind and other elements which could be distracting.
Your sacred space doesn’t need to be big. It can be something as simple as a closet or a corner of your bedroom, or it can be as large as a football field. How big or how small is entirely up to you.
A Place To Sit or Lay Down
You will probably find that you use your sacred space to meditate, pray or simply seek refuge from the outside world. With this in mind, you will want to add a place where you can comfortably sit or lay down. If your space is small, than a few soft blankets and comfortable pillows can work just fine.
Decorations and Ambiance
Remember, this is your sacred space, so adorn it with things and colors that are meaningful to you. If you do not have the ability to paint the walls, then maybe you can drape some brightly colored or printed fabrics over the walls and ceiling. You can add beaded drapes with colors and stones that inspire you. If the light from a lava lamp is your thing, you can add that too.
The way you decorate your sacred space is more important than the rest of your home, so take care that it is comfortable and pleasant to you. If you later decide that you don’t like a decoration that you used in your sacred space, you can simply remove it or replace it.
As you continue to grow and change, you can allow your ambiance to change and evolve with you.
Adding Music
Many people find comfort in music, and if this is true for you, then you may want to consider adding a small stereo to your surroundings. Music can help us to meditate and quite our mind. If you would prefer to relax to the sounds of nature, you can certainly do that too. There are a lot of smart phone and tablet apps that offer meditation music and nature sounds, so play with these apps and see if any of them work well for you.
Setting Up Your Altar
When you hear the word ‘altar,’ you may find your mind pulling up various scenes from scary movies in which a creature or person was killed on an altar. However, an altar is only a small table or platform in which you place items on it that have a deep, spiritual significant meaning to you.
Altars commonly hold incense and candles, but they can also hold statues of your favorite god, goddess or ascended masters, along with your favorite holy book. You can place your favorite divination tools on it too, such as your crystals, pendulums, dowsing rods, wands or tarot cards.
Nothing is off limits so long as it holds significant value to you. The point of an altar is to give your mind something to focus on when you enter your sacred space for mental relaxation and spiritual communication. It also draws the energy of the gods and goddesses to your space, so that you can connect with them quickly.
